Scavland on Steam Deck
The studio rebuilt inventory for a pad. Your couch is a valid bunker.
Steam’s own feature list for Scavland includes full controller support, Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and Steam Input. The store block titled Survive Anywhere says the game was built with controller and Steam Deck support in mind. This page is that promise in practical language. Pair it with controls for the keyboard keys creators spoke on camera, and with system requirements before you treat a handheld as a free lunch.
Early Access is 4 September 2026 on PC Steam. Consoles are after 1.0, according to the studio. Deck is still a PC. If a comment says “wait for PS5”, that is a different sentence from “will it run on the machine in my bag”.
What NoShadow actually rebuilt
Community hub copy is unusually specific. Inventory, looting, combat, interactions, Journal, map, and menus were redesigned so pads are not a joke. Development recaps add the pieces you will feel on a Deck:
- Steam Cloud — play on a desktop, pick up on a handheld without a USB ritual. Saves live under the studio’s slot files; Cloud is how they follow you.
- Toolbar helper — assign consumables to a hotbar instead of digging the pack mid-bleed.
- Radial menu — select primary and secondary weapons, fire those hotbar items, and do it with a stick or a mouse.
- Redundant item buttons — Equip, Unequip, Inspect, Repair, Drop, Remove attachments, so a d-pad is not hunting a tiny pixel.
- Gamepad navigation passes on the main menu, dialogue, and inventory. Those notes exist because early pads were not good enough, and the team kept patching them.
That is why this wiki’s inventory page exists next to this one. A Deck player who cannot stash, sort, or strip a muzzle without a cursor is not “playing portable”. They are fighting the UI.
Specs on a handheld
Public minimums are friendly on paper: 2.77 GHz quad-core, 4 GB RAM, 2 GB GPU, OpenGL 2.1, 1 GB listed storage. Pixel-art Unity plus a small depot is why press called it fridge-friendly. Reality checks:
- Leave disk headroom. Listed size is not the shader cache.
- TDP and fan noise are your problem, not Steam’s minimum row.
- Docked 1080p is not the same session as a 7-inch screen in a train. The top-down camera helps. Tiny inventory text does not. If a patch adds UI scale, updates will note it.
Steam Deck compatibility on the store has sat at unknown in some regional views while the studio still markets Deck support. Trust the feature flags (full controller, Cloud, Steam Input) and your own verification after 4 September 2026, not a badge that has not been reviewed yet.
How to bind a pad without wrecking the tutorial
Start with the official Steam Input template. Then change one thing. The scrapyard is trying to teach journal, interact, melee, and use. On keyboard those are J, E, F, and right-click. On a pad they will be face buttons and triggers. Do not remap during the first medkit or every guide on this site, including Getting Started, will feel like a different game.
Good Deck habits:
- Put melee on a button you will not press while looting.
- Keep aim on a trigger. Top-down aimed fire is the peek.
- Put the journal on a button you can hit while walking. Jobs die when the book is two menus deep.
- Use the radial menu for the medkit you already assigned. Opening the full pack in a hatch is how rats write obituaries.
Bad habits:
- Keyboard legends copied onto a pad 1:1
- Hiding the journal because “quests are ugly on a small screen”
- Installing a 40-part rifle that no longer fits the pack. Attachments change inventory size.
Cloud, couches, and honesty
Cloud means you can scavenge at a desk and continue in bed. It does not mean two people share a save. A mode where other people walk with you is a future plan, not a launch feature. Family Sharing is a Steam store flag, not a second Vulture in your session. This is still a single-player PvE RPG. Your Deck is another screen for the same Vulture.
If you came from a Klean or other team-adjacent video talking about difficulty options and Iron Man requests, treat those as design conversation until Steam news ships a toggle. This page will not claim an Iron Man mode is in the 4 September build unless the store says so.
Launch-week Deck checklist
-
Update the Deck OS and the Scavland depot. First-day shaders will hitch; that is not a GPU conspiracy.
-
Confirm Cloud is on before you leave the house.
-
Tick the beginner checklist with the pack on the floor, not while the train is moving.
-
Play the first hour docked if the inventory still feels dense. Portable is a reward for learning the verbs, not a requirement.
-
File UI bugs on Steam or the official Discord listed on links. Handheld reports are how the radial menu got this far.
Keyboard players can ignore this page. Pad players should still read controls so they know which verbs the footage named. Then survive anywhere, which was the marketing line, and come home, which is the actual skill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Scavland on Steam Deck?
It is a Steam PC game with full controller support and explicit Deck/handheld design notes. Play it on Deck as a PC title. Official Deck verification may still show as unknown until Valve reviews it.
Does Scavland have a console release at Early Access?
No. The studio said PC first, consoles after 1.0. Controller support in the PC build is not a PS5 date.
Will my desktop save work on Steam Deck?
Steam Cloud is implemented so progress can move between a computer and a Deck. Turn Cloud on and confirm the slot after 4 September 2026.
Where are the keyboard keys?
On the controls page. J journal, E interact, F melee, right-click use/aim in public PC footage.
