Beginner Checklist

This is the short Vulture list. If you want paragraphs, open Getting Started. If you want a gun ranking, open the starting loadout. If you want keys, open controls. Tick from the top. Stop when a box is empty.

Before you buy

  • PC or handheld meets system requirements
  • You know Early Access is 4 September 2026, Act I only
  • You are fine with single-player PvE and a slow loop
  • Steam page still agrees with this wiki on price and date

Scrapyard / first spawn

  • Open the journal with J and read the page
  • Check the backpack. Drop it and rummage if the build lets you
  • Use a medkit. You spawn hurt
  • Eat and drink. The tutorial will nag; listen
  • Note E interact and F melee
  • Do not leave until bleeding is gone

Town before the first job

  • Sell cloth, rags, duplicate junk
  • Buy food and water for a round trip
  • Buy a cleaning kit if you do not have one
  • Keep the AK-pattern rifle if you have it; clean it
  • Vendor homemade pistols if slots are tight
  • Talk to someone. Factions start as conversations
  • Take a nearby job, not the farthest icon

Packing the bag

  • Medkit
  • Bandage
  • Food + water
  • Cleaning kit
  • Ammo for one gun
  • Empty weight (no trophy pile)
  • Radiation treatment if water is on the route (survival)

On the road

  • Look at hunger before you look at loot
  • Peek corners. Humans take cover (combat)
  • Do not wade glowing water for a shortcut
  • Turn around at the first serious bleed or jam
  • Mark the way home on the map (how to play)

After the job

  • Bandage, then loot, then clean the gun, then eat
  • Turn the job in before shopping so rank and coin land together
  • Sell duplicates. Keep kits
  • Check whether a shop grew a ranked row (reputation)
  • Stop the session while you are ahead

Do not tick these on day one

  • A southbound tourist walk into a Threshold
  • A bunker hatch “just to look” (bunkers)
  • A three-gun museum in a tiny backpack
  • A faction war because a uniform looked lootable
  • A five-round legend you cannot feed (weapon tier list)

Optional demo homework

  • If the 2025 demo is still installed, play one honest hour
  • Then forget its loot table (demo)

Print this mentally. The wasteland does not have a clipboard. When Early Access patches add a new vital, this list will gain a box. Until then, food, a cleaning kit, a nearby job, and a route home.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the first thing I should do in Scavland?

Heal, eat, and read the journal. Then sell junk and take a nearby job. The essay version is Getting Started.

When should I enter a bunker?

After this checklist is boring. If any medical or food box is empty, stay on the surface. See bunkers.

Can I skip talking to factions?

You can. You will then wonder why shops are thin. Tick the talk box. Traders are people.

Is this checklist for the old demo?

It works for the demo and for Act I habits. Numbers and maps will move after 4 September 2026.
