Scavland Creature Bestiary
The officially named enemies who want you dead in Zalesye.
Three days into Early Access, the officially named bestiary is short — and that is worth saying out loud, because wikis that pad a creature list with guesses are the reason this one does not. Every enemy below appears in a first-hand source: a patch note, an official screenshot, an official gameplay clip, or the developers’ own description of the game. Unnamed creatures in footage will appear here when they carry an official name.
The confirmed creature list
| Enemy | Known facts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mother Rat | HP reduced from 350 to 200 in patch 0.5.169 | Patch notes |
| Suckers | Less HP and no longer cause Bleeding (0.5.169) | Patch notes |
| Small Rats | Cause less Bleeding (0.5.169) | Patch notes |
| Worms | Worm-like creatures existed in the demo era | Demo changelog |
| Mutants | Named as a core threat in the official description | Official description |
| Large quadruped | Appears in official gameplay footage — wading through swamp water, rearing up — but no official name | Official gameplay clip |
| Hostile survivors | Human scavengers who fight you — and each other | Official description |
Radiation and the Mist round out the threat list as environmental dangers rather than creatures. Neither has published mechanics yet — how the Mist spreads, what its coverage rules are, none of it is official — so the Mist guide sticks to what is confirmed and labels the rest unverified.
What the Day One balance pass changed
Patch 0.5.169 hit the creature roster from two directions at once: how much punishment they survive, and what injuries they inflict on you. Every named creature came out of the pass weaker, less harmful, or both.
- Mother Rat — HP cut from 350 to 200, a 43% reduction that turns a grinding fight into a winnable one for early-game gear. Steam Community discussions confirm players found them overtuned before the patch, especially in close-range shotgun fights.
- Suckers — less HP, and Bleeding removed entirely as a consequence of fighting them
- Small Rats — Bleeding reduced
Read together, the theme is a gentler early game — the patch notes say “based on the feedback we’ve already been receiving,” and the creature trio absorbed the heaviest nerfs of that pass 26 hours after launch.
Enemy AI changes in patch 0.5.169
Two subtleties landed alongside the creature balance:
- Enemy AI no longer shoots from off-screen. This is a meaningful quality-of-life change for players who died to enemies they literally could not see on their screen.
- Neutral NPCs can no longer be stealth-killed, and aiming at friendly NPCs now shows a green reticle — neutral ones show a green dot. Both the rules and the interface tell you who is off-limits before a shot goes wrong.
What about the human threats?
Mutants are only half the danger. The official description names hostile scavengers, and the Life system makes them a moving part of the world — groups patrol, wander, and get into fights you never started, with distant gunfire marking battles you never see. The combat guide covers how to handle human enemies. The reputation guide covers why shooting the wrong patrol is a shop problem, not just a bullet problem.
How to fight creatures
Combat rests on four confirmed pillars: firearms, melee, stealth, and weapon suppression — with stealth takedowns as the quiet-play option. The combat guide breaks down each. Two practical notes connect creatures to the rest of this wiki:
- With Bleeding sources reduced, your biggest mid-fight risk is now your own equipment — a gun below 30% durability can explode (see weapon durability)
- The fights you hear in the distance are real Life-system events — battles the world fought without you, and the best loot may already be gone
A large unnamed quadruped
Official gameplay footage shows a large dark beast appearing in several contexts: wading through murky swamp water toward the player, rearing up on its hind legs in a dark forest clearing, and visibly taking bleeding damage from player attacks. It has no official species name. It will not appear on this page with a fabricated label. When NoShadow names it, this entry will be updated.
What comes next
New creatures arrive with the roadmap. Acts II and III promise more enemy variety. Each new creature lands on this page as it is confirmed in an official source — patch notes, official screenshots, or developer statement. Check the updates hub for the latest confirmations.
Until then, treat every unnamed enemy in footage as unconfirmed until a name appears in an official channel. This wiki would rather say “unnamed large quadruped” than invent “Marsh Stalker” to look complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What creatures are in Scavland?
Confirmed creatures include Mother Rats, Suckers, Small Rats, worms from the demo era, mutants as a category, and unnamed large quadrupeds in official footage. Hostile survivors are human enemies. See the full table above.
What happened to creatures in patch 0.5.169?
Mother Rat HP dropped from 350 to 200. Suckers lost Bleeding and HP. Small Rats have reduced Bleeding. Enemy AI also stopped shooting from off-screen.
